Text Box: Composts
The key to successful planting lies in the ground. A plant relies on its root system to supply it with water and food which, along with sunlight and air, are the key things it needs to grow and thrive. In Essex, as in much of the South-East, our soil is thick, heavy clay—prone to water-logging and quite inhospitable to the delicate, exploratory roots of newly-planted plants. For that reason, it’s vital to always incorporate good quality, nutrient-rich compost whenever you plant, and to dig extra compost or soil-improver into your flower-beds regularly. At Chigwell Nursery we sell a staggering amount of different top-quality composts, so we know the majority of our customers understand this only too well, but if you’re new to gardening, or don’t have much luck with plants, it’s vital to remember that whenever you buy plants, you need to get fresh compost. Most plants need a multi-purpose compost, but some are acid-loving and need a lime-free, ericaceous mix—if you’re not sure, just ask a member of staff. Remember, there’s no point spending good money on a plant and then condemning it by putting it into Essex clay—the more goodness you put in the ground, the better the results from your plant. For best results, follow the planting guide to the right.

1. Dig a hole twice the size of the pot

2. Back-fill with fresh compost

3. Mix in the appropriate Miracle-Gro Controlled Release Plant Food granules

4. Remove plant from pot and place in hole. Back-fill with a mixture of fresh compost and garden soil. Press down firmly but do not compact soil

5. Water in well, and remember to water and feed your plant regularly
